I’ve been bargained

I’ve been sold

the story’s about to unfold

you see

I survived a botched abortion

you see

I was promised to the landlady

a newborn

rejected by my father

sold by my mother

she gained her freedom

bought by my grandmother

she bargained for her blood

but she came back for us

Julissa and me

five years later she came back

abruptly tearing us from honduras

emigrating to new orleans

when you are five years old

you have no say so in these things

new orleans

each morning holding a brown bag

with my favorite rotting fruit

to the strange woman

I demanded

take me back to my mother

I hated this woman

she took me away from my mother

she took me away from everything I knew

except one thing

my big sis Julissa

you could not separate us

but I had a new life now

a new mother

a new father

a new little sister

a new home

in a strange

far away land

I did not understand

you see

five years is a lifetime to a five year old
