My response was fickle,

like biting into a sour pickle.

The words sped from your heart to your head,

flew out of your mouth-

faster than a cat chasing a mouse.

Three little words leading the race,

you never thought to slow your pace-

“I love you!”

Relieved you shouted it again,

“I love you!”

Thinking maybe, just maybe,

you’d hear from me an amen.

I had no choice but to turn and run,

I warned you, love for me

one and done!

Perhaps if you waited a minute, a year or two,

I might eventually shout back- I love you!
